Sophy Romvari’s stand out feature debut unpicks lived memories, childhood and family dynamics.

Set on Vancouver Island in the late 1990s, Blue Heron follows eight year old Sasha and her Hungarian family as they attempt to start afresh in a new town.

As the narrative progresses through the eyes of Sasha, daily life becomes strained by the increasingly dangerous and challenging behaviour of her older brother, Jeremy. Her observations bring light to both the quiet and loud fears held within the family and highlights the complexities of family life.

Drawing on her own memories through bold and exciting artistic choices, Romvari crafts a unique and deeply personal portrait of childhood, loneliness in all its forms, and the fragility of recollection.

Blue Heron won both the Locarno Film Festival 2025 Swatch First Feature Award and the Toronto International Film Festival 2025 Best Canadian Discovery.
