Finding Performances

Lee Sang-il’s ode to art, births a cultural phenomenon in this epic tale of growth and dedication.

Taken under the wing of a famous Kabuki actor, after the death of his father and leader of a yakuza gang; 14-year-old Kikuo dedicates himself to the traditional form of theatre alongside the actor’s only son Shunsuke.

We follow the pair as they navigate ambition, betrayal, and scandals - evolving personally and in their art as performers across the span of decades.

Kokuho dominated the 49th Japan Academy Film Prize, winning a whopping ten awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Premiering at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, it also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

The profound emotional performances and care and respect given to the Kabuki artform has supported Kokuho to become the highest grossing live action domestic film in Japan’s history.
